Tank Temperature and Other Habitats Requirements Needed for Discus Fish
Discus fish are perhaps one of the toughest types of aquarium fish to own and keep healthy. Part of this is because of the stringent tank requirements they have. Often they’re habitat needs are not compatible with other fish. Couple that with the territorial nature of them, then you’re likely going to have to setup a separate aquarium just for your discus fish.
To better understand their temperature needs, it’s best we take a look at the natural habitat of discus fish. They originate from the Amazon river in South America, so their need for a warm, low pH aquarium. Ideally the fish tank’s water temperature needs to be in and around 82-84 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius). This insures a nice warm environment closely resembling the water of South America. Another major requirement is to have a the water be slightly acidic, around a pH of 6.
While those are main requirements but there are other attributes to consider as well. Discus fish need a sizable aquarium to properly roam and setup their territory. Getting a tank with room for around 40 gallons should suffice for most peoples needs. Because of they’re not very disease resistant, discus fish need to have very clean water. To do this you’ll likely have to replace the water every few days. Add some chloramines, clean the water regularly and you’ll be on your way to having healthier discus fish.
